Georgia driving permits for extension applicants

Some non-citizens who live in Georgia have not able to renew their driver’s licenses while an application for extension of their immigration status is pending at USCIS.  This typically happens when the non-citizen’s immigration document has expired, but an application to extend status was filed prior to the immigration document expiring.

The Georgia legislature recently passed SB 122 which fixes this situation for non-citizens who live in Georgia.  Effective January 1, 2014, non-citizens whose driver’s licenses have expired, or will expire within 30 days, can get temporary driving permits valid for up to 120 days.  In order to obtain the temporary driving permit the non-citizen must provide proof of the immigration status extension filing to Georgia Department of Driver Services.
